On the 11th of November 2009, Floriana Primary School within the San Gorg Preca College, was awarded the prestigious Green Flag during the EkoSkola Seminar held at Tal-Handaq Boys’ Secondary School. The presentation ceremony was presided by the Hon. Minister George Pullicino and the Hon. Minister Dolores Cristina.
Our school joined EkoSkola in 2007 and the project had kicked off with the EkoSkola electoral campaign and the EkoSkola elections. It was extremely important to set up the EkoSkola Committee so that the work that was already being done could be monitored, evaluated and continued and all the school could work towards achieving the eco code. The projects, that had already started; such as the School Embellishment Project; were continued with greater enthusiasm. New projects were proposed by the new committee to make the school a more healthy and lively school with healthy and happy pupils.
At our school, everyone is encouraged to reuse, reduce and recycle. During crafts, teachers and pupils use cereal boxes and other used material, creating wonderful works of art. This way we all learn that new things can be created from old and unwanted material, thus respecting nature and the environment. We also collected used batteries, stamps, cards and mobile cards. With the help of WasteServ, we separate paper and plastic so that they can be recycled. A compost bin was set up. The School Embellishment Project was started last year and everyone at school was involved in planting our own plants to decorate the windowsills around the school. This gave our school a greener and fresher look. As part of our School Development Plan, parts of the school were refurbished and other areas were given a total revamp. An old painting, depicting Christ with some children, which had been lying forlorn in the school store was expertly restored and now takes pride of place in one of the school corridors.
The whole school got really involved this project and all worked together as a team. Everyone at Floriana Primary School, is so proud to have reached such an objective. EkoSkola is an international set up founded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and locally represented by Nature Trust (Malta).

I wish to heartfully thank all my staff and all the pupils for winning this award. The Green Flag is surely not only going to boost our confidence but also our School’s ethos. Well done and Keep it up!
Keep up the good work
Dear students, teachers, Mr Miceli and all the staff,
I have been visiting your school for the past three years and I can honestly say that you really managed to change the school thouroughly. The difference is not only cosmetic but even more pronounced in the attitudes. You have managed to infuse sustainable lifestyles into the school’s day-to-day functioning. For all those who have not yet visited please note that the enthusiasm in this school is literally contagious.
All your achievements bring with them an added responsibility but I strongly believe that if you continue to provide students with opportunities and breeding spaces for their ideas to flourish, the sky is the limit.
Well done to all!
Good work..thanks for all your support in our children.. keep it up. xxxxxxxx
