Lest We Forget

11 November – World War I ends

At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the Great First World War ended. At 5 a.m. that morning, Germany, very short of soldiers and supplies and about to get invaded, signed a peace agreement with the Allies in a car outside Compiégne in France. The First World War left nine million soldiers dead and 21 million wounded, with Germany, Russia, Austria, Hungary, France, and Great Britain each losing nearly a million or more lives. In addition, at least five million civilians died from disease or starvation.

Every year we remember all those who died during this dreadful war. A special ceremony is held near the War Memorial in Floriana on Remembrance Day. Poppies are worn on this day.
