Saint Martin

November brings about the traditional feast of Saint Martin, on the 11th of the month. In Malta it is customery to give a bag to children on this day. Normally it consists of the San Martin bun, some fruit, sweets and nuts. The fruit can be an apple, an orange or a tangerine. These are fruits that are connected to this time of year. Although this feast is celebrated in many different countries in Europe, it is more popular in Sicily and in Malta.  Usually, during this time of year, we have some fine weather. It is called Is-Sajf ta’ San Martin. The proper feast is held at Bahrija where there is a beautiful church dedicated to this saint. A procession is held. A lot of people go to Bahrija to take part in the great fair that is organized to coincide with the feast.
