January is here!

Sounds of joy and of merry,
A new morning has come!
Then shout merry January,
Something will truly come!
There Janus stands up high,
A blessing of a new beginning.
And Janus flies up high,
A gift of a new beginning!

January is the first month of the year. It has 31 days and the first day is known as New Year’s Day. It is named after the roman god Janus, the god of doors. This god had the ability to look at both the past and the future. This is exactly what we should be doing at this time of the year: assessing what we did in 2014 and looking  forward to doing better in 2015.

January brings along some important festivities. Apart fron New Year’s Day, there is Epiphany on the 6th of January. This feast reminds us of the Three Wise Men. Then there is the Conversion of Saint Paul on the 25th. For the people of Floriana, the 22nd is very important as it marks the liturgical feast of our patron saint Publius. During this month we try to create an awareness about the importance of having trees around us. In fact Arbor Day is celebrated in January as well.
