Bird of the Month – The Red Kite

The Red Kite – L-Astun Aħmar

The Red Kite is a rare visitor. In Maltese it is called Astun Aħmar. It is a large beautiful bird of prey which forms part of the raptor family, like the eagles and the buzzards. This bird is very easily recognised because of its forked tail and striking colour. It is mostly red with white patches under the wings. It has a pale grey head. Usually it grows up to 70cm with a wing span of about 180 cm. It is such a strong bird that it can fly for a long time without even beating its wings. Making use of its sharp beak it eats many types of small animals such as mice, rats and even rabbits.
