Shapes was the main topic for this activity held in Ms Margaret`s class. The children enjoyed programming the Bee Bot. Whilst working out this activity the children recognised and described the shapes being used. The use of the Bee-Bot helped them to learn more about directions whilst counting the steps it needs to take to reach the right destination.
The little ones truly enjoyed learning shapes in this very playful and fun way.
Il-‘Buddy Reading’ huwa mument ta’ qari mit-tfal għat-tfal. Din is-sena dan il-metodu ta’ qari qiegħed isir mal-klassijiet kollha tal-primarja (yr 1 – yr 6). Kull ġimgħa xi klassi tar-raba’, tal-ħames jew tas-sitt sena tingħaqad ma’ klassi tal-ewwel, tat-tieni jew tat-tielet sena biex it-tfal il-kbar jaqraw siltiet minn kotba lit-tfal iżgħar minnhom. B’dan il-metodu filwaqt li jkunu qed jibbenefikaw mill-qari ż-żewġ gruppi, ikunu wkoll qed jixxerjaw il-gost li wieħed jaqra kotba varji skont l-abbiltà tiegħu. It-tfal tal-klassijiet il-kbar ikollhom is-sodisfazzjon li qed jaqraw u jkunu mudelli ta’ kif ikun qari tajjeb, u l-istudenti tal-klassijiet iż-żgħar ikollhom iċ-ċans jisimgħu siltiet minn kotba minn studenti akbar minnhom.
The kindergarten 2 classes made a healthy cooking activity by creating faces with food.
This activity gave the children the opportunity to be creative while practice maths and science skills. We used healthy food like bread, cheese spread mixed with tomato paste, carrots, tomatoes and olives.
The round bun was divided in half and it became a circle for the faces. The children were exploring the mixture of light yellow spread cheese with tomato paste, the result was a peach paste. The use of one orange carrot for the nose, two green olives for the eyes and one piece of red tomatoes for the mouth helped children practice counting & colours. With a good hand and eye co-ordination the children made the perfect faces and later enjoyed eating it.
The supermarket is a great place to teach and reinforce mathematical concepts. There are numerous opportunities to use the routine actions of shopping for groceries to reinforce concepts students are learning in school.
The year 6 students had the opportunity to visit Smart Supermarket, together with their teachers and the Maths support teacher, Ms Miriam, where they did various maths activities in an everyday life situation. Students estimated the weight for half a kilo tomatoes, weighed the tomatoes, checked expiry dates on products, compared different brands or sizes of the same product to find out the best deal, discussed special offers on display, found various 3D shapes around them, discussed capacity and finally estimated the cost of their shopping. Yes, we also did some shopping as before going on this outing the students together with Ms Brenda and Ms Maria (nurture class) had a session on table manners and healthy food. They also had a session with Ms Graziella (LML support teacher) where students discussed the ingredients needed to make healthy burgers for the whole class and finalised a shopping list. During the latter session students had to estimate weight and cost of all the ingredients.
Finally, after going to the supermarket, children will cook their own healthy burgers, thus using Mathematics once more as they need to weigh, measure, and divide using an everyday life situation. What an enjoyable way to do Mathematics!!
