Dinja Waħda (One World) is BirdLife Malta’s big environmental education project. The aim of this initiative is to generate an informed and active environmental ethic in schoolchildren and their teachers, through doing fun activities for nature. Education is our strongest weapon against environmental destruction. (BirdLife Malta)
The Dinja Waħda Logo – the world depicted on a balloon is meant to symbolise the fragility of the world we live in. Dijna Waħda focuses on doing something for our world. We all know how easy it is for a balloon to burst and get destroyed if its not taken care of … we sure don’t want the world we live in destroyed, so together we can make a change for our present and our children’s future.
Every class has an action guide and the children together with their teacher choose any activity. For each activity the school is awarded points. These points are calculated and the more one has the more prestigious is the award. At the end of the scholastic year, when enough points are collected, they are submitted to Birdlife Malta office for the award scheme. The Gold award is the most prestigious award a school may obtain. When a school works hard enough through the years this is appreciated and awarded too. If a school manages to obtain 3 consecutive Gold Awards in 3 years running the school is awarded the Blue Banner Award.
So far, we at San Ġorġ Preca College Floriana Primary have always won the Gold Award and last year we also won the Blue Banner Award. These awards are encouraging as it shows appreciation for our hard work in this regard. We all have the well-being of our environment at heart and our hope is that this love for the environment is instilled in our pupils and that it is carried with our pupils in their future life too.
