The Year 6s discover Maths at the Supermarket

The supermarket is a great place to teach and reinforce mathematical concepts.   There are numerous opportunities to use the routine actions of shopping for groceries to reinforce concepts students are learning in school.

The year 6 students had the opportunity to visit Smart Supermarket, together with their teachers and the Maths support teacher, Ms Miriam, where they did various maths activities in an everyday life situation.   Students estimated the weight for half a kilo tomatoes, weighed the tomatoes, checked expiry dates on products, compared different brands or sizes of the same product to find out the best deal, discussed special offers on display, found various 3D shapes around them, discussed capacity and finally estimated the cost of their shopping.  Yes, we also did some shopping as before going on this outing the students together with Ms Brenda and Ms Maria (nurture class) had a session on table manners and healthy food.  They also had a session with Ms Graziella (LML support teacher) where students discussed the ingredients needed to make healthy burgers for the whole class and finalised a shopping list.  During the latter session students had to estimate weight and cost of all the ingredients.

Finally, after going to the supermarket, children will cook their own healthy burgers, thus using Mathematics once more as they need to weigh, measure, and divide using an everyday life situation.  What an enjoyable way to do Mathematics!!

L-Annimali – Special Assembly tas-Sitt Sena

L-ewwel Assembly għas-sena skolastika 2016 -2017 saret mill-klassi tas-sitt sena.  It-tema kienet dwar l-annimali.  Kulħadd għandu d-dritt li jgħix u li jgħix ħieles.  L-Assembly bdiet billi tifel li kien qed jirrappreżenta ljun ġera wara żewġt itfal li kienu qed jirrappreżentaw żewġt iċriev. Wieħed miċ-ċriev b’nifsu maqtugħ qal lill-iljun kif qatagħlu nifsu u l-iljun irrisponda li hu wkoll kellu dritt li jiekol.  Hawn daħlu n-narraturi li spjegaw dwar l-annimali karnivori u dawk erbivori u kif dawn iżommu bilanċ fin-natura. Komplew jispjegaw kif huwa proprju l-bniedem li qed jeqred l-armonija u l-bilanċ fin-natura.  Hawn tifel li jirrappreżenta għasfur jispjega kif il-kaċċa u l-insib qed ikomplu jeqirdu l-ispeċi ta’ diversi annimali.  Iżda mhux kollox negattiv għaliex hawn diversi għaqdiet li jiddefendu l-annimali u anki sptarijiet għal dawn il-kreaturi.  Hemm ukoll min saħansitra jħallilhom il-wirt.  Fl-aħħar ingħata xi tagħrif dwar il-padrun tal-annimali San Franġisk t’Assisi.

Din l-Assembly ittelgħet mit-tfal tas-Sitt Sena bl-għajnuna tal-għalliema tagħhom Ms Rita, Ms Josianne u Ms Charlene.

European Schools’ Sports Day 30th September 2016

All the students and members of staff at San Ġorġ Preca College Floriana Primary School participated in well organized 2 hour long sports event in order to be part of the ESSD activity.  This was held on the 30th of September 2016 and was held in our own school yard.  The event kicked off when the Head of School explained the raison d’etre behind this event and that the school is  promoting a healthy mind in a healthy body in accordance with its action plans.  The school yard was divided into various sections, each housing a different game; and everyone was invited to take part in these fun activities.  Games also included some Maltese traditional passtimes such as the Passju.

In conjunction with this event, students and teachers were also encouraged to contribute in a silver collection in aid of STRINA.
