Shine little Sunflowers

On a warm and slightly cloudy day, last May, the children of the kindergarten classes had the lovely opportunity of visiting a very pleasant farm in Manikata. The children enjoyed every moment, seeing the different animals, especially when they had a chance to feed the beautiful white pigeons and sheep!

Before waving a very reluctant goodbye, each student was happily given a pot, already filled with sunflower seeds. The children couldn’t wait to see their sunflowers growing and blooming. So, after only a few days, a very fun school activity was created to make these little wishes come true.

All of the children planted their sunflower seeds in the small garden area in our school ground. This way, they would have the greatest pleasure of seeing each and every one of their sunflowers growing and beautifying the school’s surroundings.

Flowers are the sunshine that spreads its yellow wings from down under the earth, and what better way to shine our school than with fresh golden sunflowers planted by little angels of the earth?

Tree of the Month – Olive Tree

The Olive Tree – Iż-Żebbuġa

Olive trees are evergreen trees found in most Mediterranean countries. A very long time ago the olive trees grew all over Malta and the olives and olive oil acquired from them, used to be exported to other countries. Evidence of this are places in Malta like Ħaż-Żebbuġ, Għajn Żejtuna, Birżebbuġa and Iż-Żejtun, which got their name from this particular tree, because it used to grow abundantly in that area, as well as the many huge stone presses found in various places mostly with a connection to the Roman period. The olive tree is very strong and can live for up to 500 years. Its leaves are dark green on top and greyish underneath and are usually replaced every three years, falling mostly in spring.

Ġurnata l-Manikata

Waslet il-ġurnata tat-12 ta’ Mejju fejn it-tfal kollha tal-Kinder marru jżuru lil Veronica u lill-kelb tagħha Bo, fir-Razzett tal-Qasam ġewwa l-Manikata.

Kif wasalna hemm, laqgħuna Veronica, Roseanne u Bo, u flimkien bdejna nosservaw il-kuluri tal-ammont kbir ta’ fjuri li kien hemm mal-ġenb tat-triq aħna u mexjin lejn ir-razzett. Dħalna u morna nitimgħu l-ħamiem li ġew madwarna hekk kif raw it-tfal jitfgħulhom il-qamħirrun. Wara bqajna sejrin nitimgħu t-tiġieġ, il-papri u l-mogħoż. Rajna wkoll fejn ibidu l-bajd it-tiġieġ u rajna wkoll bajd tal-papri.

Tlajna aktar il-fuq u rajna lil Ġorġ, il-ħmar, u tmajnieh … u tliet nagħġiet…Snow White, Lilly u Buttuna, li ħallewna nidħlu ħdejhom u narawhom aktar mill-qrib.

Veronika ħaditna wkoll naraw kif jikber il-frawli. Fil-pjanti kien hemm il-fjuri kif ukoll frawli aħdar għadu żgħir u xi frawli ieħor aħmar lest biex jinqata’.

Wara li ħsilna jdejna, morna ġo għalqa oħra mimlija siġar li taħthom kien hemm imwejjed u bankijiet  tal-injam, fejn hemmhekk kulħadd sab post u Veronica qassmitilna l-ilma, il-ħobz bil-kunserva u bettieħ frisk maqtugħ mill-għelieqi tal-lokal.  Kif kiel kulħadd morna ġo għalqa oħra nilagħbu qalb is-siġar u l-fjuri.

It-tfal ħadu gost ħafna għax għalihom kienet esperjenza unika li jmorru fil-kampanja  u jmissu b’idejhom stess in-natura u l-annimali.

Tree of the Month – Holm Oak

The Holm Oak – Il-Balluta

This is an evergreen tree. This very ancient tree was very common in the Maltese Islands but it is now becoming increasingly rare. The leaves resemble those of a holly. The fruit of the Holm Oak are called acorns. This tree can still be found growing naturally in a few places such as Wardija and L-Imġiebaħ.

Ħarġa sal-Argotti

Fl-Argotti ġiet organizzata Science Week u aħna l-membri tal-EkoSkola morna mal-għalliema tagħna Ms Brenda u Ms Maria. Ġew it-tfal tal-ħames klassi wkoll magħna flimkien mal-għalliema tagħhom.

Iltqajna ma’ tfal minn skejjel oħra wkoll. Fl-Argotti kien hemm seba’ tined u f’kull tinda kien hemm attivita’ li kellha x’taqsam max-xjenza. Fost l-attivitajiet li kien hemm, l-aktar li laqtuni kienu meta qagħdna ngħoddu kemm ikollha żmien siġra. Dan nistgħu narawh miz-zokk tagħha. Rajna diversi tipi ta’ xtieli kif ukoll xammejna u missejna diversi tipi ta’ herbs li nużaw għall-ikel. F’tinda minnhom kien hemm il-compost. Aħna rajna kif dan isir u kif nistgħu nagħmluh aħna wkoll fid-djar tagħna. F’tinda minnhom kien hemm akkwarju bil-ħut u stajna naraw dawk il-pjanti li jgħixu fl-akkwarju wkoll.

L-aħħar attivita’ kienet sabiħa wisq. Imxejna fuq tipi differenti ta’ ġebel u ċagħaq u ridna nħossu jekk hux iebes, artab, kiesaħ jew sħun. Kellna ineħħu ż-żarbun u l-kalzetti u tgħidx kemm ħadna gost!

Din il-ġurnata mhux ser ninsijha għax tgħallimt ħafna affarijiet sbieħ u ġodda. Fl-aħħar ktibna isimna wkoll fuq liżar li kien ippreparat apposta u ħadna sehem f’kompetizzjoni wkoll!
