Shine little Sunflowers

On a warm and slightly cloudy day, last May, the children of the kindergarten classes had the lovely opportunity of visiting a very pleasant farm in Manikata. The children enjoyed every moment, seeing the different animals, especially when they had a chance to feed the beautiful white pigeons and sheep!

Before waving a very reluctant goodbye, each student was happily given a pot, already filled with sunflower seeds. The children couldn’t wait to see their sunflowers growing and blooming. So, after only a few days, a very fun school activity was created to make these little wishes come true.

All of the children planted their sunflower seeds in the small garden area in our school ground. This way, they would have the greatest pleasure of seeing each and every one of their sunflowers growing and beautifying the school’s surroundings.

Flowers are the sunshine that spreads its yellow wings from down under the earth, and what better way to shine our school than with fresh golden sunflowers planted by little angels of the earth?

Żjara fil-Parlament – Summit tal-EkoSkola 2016

Bħas-snin ta’ qabel ġietna opportunità oħra biex nattendu għall-mozzjoni mressqa mill-EkoSkola fil-Parlament. Din is-sena kien imiss lilna Elias u Nirvana sabiex nattendu u nipparteċipaw f’dan is-summit. Flimkien magħna ġew Ms Maria u Ms Janette.

Iltqajna ma’ diversi membri parlamentari kif ukoll studenti minn skejjel oħra li jiffurmaw parti mill-EkoSkola. Konna eċitati u entużjasti fl-istess ħin għax din kienet l-ewwel esperjenza għalina li mmorru fil-Parlament. Apparti minn hekk tkellimna ukoll mal-Ministri dwar il-punti li nħarġu fis-summit ta’ kif nistgħu ntejbu l-ambjent li ngħixu fih.

Aħna għidna dawn il-punti li ġejjin:

* ikun hemm servizz tat-trasport pubbliku b’xejn matul ir-rush hours (li għandhom jintgħażlu wara studju dwar liema hu l-aħjar ħin).

* isir sussidju għat-trasport tal-iskejjel.

* il-karozzi tal-linja jkunu elettriċi.

* isir kontroll fuq l-ammont ta’ karozzi li jista’ jkollha kull familja.

* jingħata kreditu lil min juża ħafna t-trasport pubbliku.

* fit-trasport pubbliku jkun hemm aktar rotot diretti.

* ikunu inċentivati l-użu tar-roti (ebikes) u muturi u jinħolqu aktar bicycle u bus lanes.

* togħla l-età ta’ meta tista’ ġġib il-liċenzja tas-sewqan ta’ karozza u tinżel l-età tal-liċenzja tal-muturi.

* aktar servizzi tal-Gvern jingħataw fil-lokalitajiet sabiex jitnaqqas l-ammont ta’ nies li jmorru l-Belt biex jinqdew.

* li x-xogħlijiet fit-toroq isiru matul il-lejl.

Din l-esperjenza m’aħna ser ninsewha qatt u ninsabu kuntenti li niffurmaw parti mill-EkoSkola peress li toffri opportunitajiet uniċi!

Tree of the Month – Olive Tree

The Olive Tree – Iż-Żebbuġa

Olive trees are evergreen trees found in most Mediterranean countries. A very long time ago the olive trees grew all over Malta and the olives and olive oil acquired from them, used to be exported to other countries. Evidence of this are places in Malta like Ħaż-Żebbuġ, Għajn Żejtuna, Birżebbuġa and Iż-Żejtun, which got their name from this particular tree, because it used to grow abundantly in that area, as well as the many huge stone presses found in various places mostly with a connection to the Roman period. The olive tree is very strong and can live for up to 500 years. Its leaves are dark green on top and greyish underneath and are usually replaced every three years, falling mostly in spring.

Tree of the Month – Holm Oak

The Holm Oak – Il-Balluta

This is an evergreen tree. This very ancient tree was very common in the Maltese Islands but it is now becoming increasingly rare. The leaves resemble those of a holly. The fruit of the Holm Oak are called acorns. This tree can still be found growing naturally in a few places such as Wardija and L-Imġiebaħ.

Is-Sitt Summit tal-EkoSkola

Din is-sena kien imiss lilna Jael, Rico, Haylee, Nirvana u Elias li nattendu għall-Young People’s Summit li ilu jsir għal dawn l-aħħar sitt snin. It-tema kienet fuq Climate Change – we care about our future. Iltqajna Dar il-Mediterran u kellna xi workshops Forti Sant’Iermu. Tkun okkażżjoni fejn niltaqgħu ma’ skejjel oħra li huma membri fl-EkoSkola.

Semmejna diversi punti fosthom:

-      Nippruvaw ma nużawx affarijiet li jagħmlu l-ħsara lill-arja meta m’hemmx bżonn nużawhom minħabba l-arja l-ħażina li tissejjaħ CO2;

-      Xogħolijiet tat-toroq isiru matul il-lejl sabiex filgħodu ma jkunx hawn ħafna traffiku;

-      Ninkoraġġixxu l-bejgħ ta’ prodotti lokali.

Aħna ħriġna b’dawn il-punti fejn kollha ser ngħiduhom meta mmorru fil-Parlament:

  1. Nagħmlu aktar għarfien fuq it-televiżjon bħal ‘media spots’ qabel l-aħbarijiet fuq kull stazzjon minn tfal kif ukoll persuni famużi sabiex il-poplu jkun jaf aktar fuq il-klima u l-ħsara li qed issir;
  2. Kontroll fuq il-permessi tal-bini u aktar tħawwil ta’ siġar;
  3. Anqas ‘junk mail’ minn min jirriklama billi titħallas xi taxxa ma’ ammonti kbar ta’ printing. Ukoll irid ikun hemm kontroll li dan il-‘junk mail’ ma jintefax f’letter boxes li mhumiex abitabbli għax qed jispiċċaw jintremew jew jitħallew fuq bankini tad-djar. Dawn ir-riklami jistgħu jintwerew fuq social media;
  4. Peress li l-uffiċini tal-gvern huma kollha stazzjonati l-Belt, nistgħu nagħtu aktar poter lill-kunsilli lokali fejn il-poplu jkun jista’ jinqegħda aħjar minn affarijiet governattivi mill-lokal tiegħu u hekk nevitaw ukoll li jkun hemm aktar użu mill-karozzi personali.

F’din il-ġurnata tgħallimna ħafna sabiex nieħdu ħsieb id-dinja ta’ madwarna sabiex titgawda minn ġenerazzjoni għal oħra!
