FLORIANA PRIMARY SCHOOL taking part in the kreattiv project

Towards the end of the last scholastic year, our school was approached by Ms Claire Massa, HOD for Music, and invited to apply for the Kreattiv Project.  The application was sent and the chosen topic was The Sea – to co-incide with our EkoSkola theme for the forthcoming two years.  A detailed programme of events was set during which the students will be receiving knowledge and learning more through the creative arts: dance, art, music, drama and creative writing.  The students will be taking part in talks, discussions and workshops related to the chosen topic and then they will be sharing their knowledge and ideas not just with their parents but with the other members of the local community as well.  Various well known local personalities have been invited for this Project. To name just some there are:  Professor Alan Deidun, Ms. Liliana Fleri Soler, Dr. Timothy Gambin, Mr. Luke Baldacchino, Moreorless Theatre and Zfin Malta.  Students will also be visiting the Maritime Museum and Vittoriosa, Alka Ceramics, the National Acquarium and other places.  An exhibition with the kids’ work will be set up at school and a book with the writings, drawings and crafts will be published towards the end of the Project.  The application was accepted by the Arts Council and the school will be receiving funding to carry on with the proposed programme.

The general aim of the Project is to:

  • Initiate creative projects in classrooms, schools and colleges through collaborations between teachers, students and creative practitioners and, in so doing, to facilitate creative education as a key tool for holistic development.
  • Introduce children and young people to potential careers in the cultural and creative sector, through selected collaborations with higher educational institutions.
  • Embed cultural and creative entrepreneurship in schools as expressed in the National Cultural Policy.
  • Encourage collaboration between educational institutions, the culture and creative industries, and other relevant sectors such as science and technology.
  • Create employment opportunities for creative professionals.
  • Encourage creative collaborations amongst educational institutions, and partnerships with public and private cultural operators.

The European School Sport Day (ESSD) is a school day dedicated to having fun, playing together and promoting physical activity and health for everyone. Our school, embedding such an ethos as part of its philosophy, has been an ESSD since last year.  Every year, towards the start of the new scholastic year, it takes part in this European celebration which provides a lot of opportunites for the school.

The European School Sports Day was held at our school on Friday 29th September 2017.  All the students turned up in their PE kits and all took part in various sports activities in our school yard.  The space was divided into different stations in which the students took an active role and enjoyed themselves whilst keeping in mind that health and wellbeing are very important for them.  This 120 minute activity was held with the collaboration of the Kunsill Malti tal-Isports and the direct involvement of coach Mr. Ludvic Bartolo.

During such events the students learnt:

  1. To raise the profile of physical education (PE) and school sport
  2. To create fun and enjoyment through physical activity initiatives for young people
  3. To promote health and wellbeing for lifelong learning
  4. To foster social inclusion and develop social competences among their students.

The European School Sport Day is inspired by the Hungarian School Sport Day; an event which has been organised by the Hungarian School Sport Federation for the last 10 years.

The Traffic Snake Game

These last two weeks our school took part in a traffic campaign. This campaign’s aim was to encourage primary students to walk or cycle or use other sustainable means of transport; by bus or car pooling to school rather then using a car.

The children had to choose from a number of stickers of a bus, a bicycle, people walking and a car with 3 people in it (car pooling), to stick on another sticker and stick it on an enormous snake which was put in the school foyer.

A kindergarten class also prepared a board with transport magnets and the children were asked every morning how they came to school.

At the end of these two weeks we should see a positive result, with more children walking, car-pooling or using the bus more frequently.

This campaign is organised by Paragon together with the EU.

Buddy Reading – naqraw mal-ħbieb

Il-‘Buddy Reading’ huwa mument ta’ qari mit-tfal għat-tfal.  Din is-sena dan il-metodu ta’ qari qiegħed isir mal-klassijiet kollha tal-primarja (yr 1 – yr 6).  Kull ġimgħa xi klassi tar-raba’, tal-ħames jew tas-sitt sena tingħaqad ma’ klassi tal-ewwel, tat-tieni  jew tat-tielet sena biex it-tfal il-kbar jaqraw siltiet minn kotba lit-tfal iżgħar minnhom.  B’dan il-metodu filwaqt li jkunu qed jibbenefikaw mill-qari ż-żewġ gruppi, ikunu wkoll qed jixxerjaw il-gost li wieħed jaqra kotba varji skont l-abbiltà tiegħu.  It-tfal tal-klassijiet il-kbar ikollhom is-sodisfazzjon li qed jaqraw u jkunu mudelli ta’ kif ikun qari tajjeb, u l-istudenti tal-klassijiet iż-żgħar ikollhom iċ-ċans jisimgħu siltiet minn kotba minn studenti akbar minnhom.
